Hosted by the Singlehanded Sailing Society, two-hour sessions will include both lectures and discussions on the topics at hand. All seminars will be presented at Oakland Yacht Club, 1101 Pacific Marina, Alameda from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Doors open at 6:30 PM.
June 11, 2014 – Oakland YC, 7 30 PM, Weather / Race Strategy – Review the typical weather in late June in the Eastern Pacific, the weather artifacts that can be used to advantage, and general race strategy discussion.
November 13, 2013 – Power Management – How to keep your electronic devices working and batteries charged. Discussion on electrical budgets and charging systems. Slides archived here.
December 11, 2013 – Rigging and Sails. The Hawaii Race sail plan, spinnakers, keeping it all flying. Just in time to catch off-season discounts, too. Sail and rigging repairs at sea.
January 8, 2014 – Emergency Rudders, Self Steering, Autopilot characteristics, AP failures and installations. Slides archived at SSS_Autopilot_011314
February 12, 2014 – The return trip. Shipping options, sailing considerations.
March 12, 2014 – Communications at sea. Transpac Co-Chair, Brian Boschma will discuss methods of staying in touch with the Race Committee, how to troubleshoot generation problems and fix what might break at sea. In his own inimitable style, Mike Jefferson will offer a detailed installation guide of single sideband radios, including RF supression and grounding. He will also discuss the integration with a Pactor modem, and a bit about Airmail (the program). Patrick Freeman of Delorme will discuss satellite communications, and Greg Nelsen has agreed to discuss the loss of his boom 900 nautical miles out from Hawaii and how he repaired it underway.
April 9, 2014 – Provisioning and Medical considerations. Learn about the nutritional needs of long-distance racers to help provision. Later, get ideas on how to stock your offshore medical kit and handle inboard medical emergencies. (See presentation documents below.)
May 31 – Jun1, 2014 – Cruise-in to the Richmond Yacht Club – Bring your boat for show and tell. This is a great opportunity to get to know each other in a relaxed environment. Pot Luck dinner Saturday, continental breakfast Sunday morning. The RYC will be staging the Delta Ditch Run so the guest dock at RYC won’t be available until Saturday at 1200.
